One of those youtube is going down the tube threads

Don't wannabe
Youtube has made a lot of changes over the years, most have been frowned upon, by users. Many also by creators. It is clear that their dominance on the streaming world is not going to end any time soon, but...
With youtube lowering the bitrate for lower, more manageable resolutions, messing up the user interface more and more, unsubscribing people without them knowing, losing comments in to some black holes, and many other irritating improvements, one has to ask. Has any of you thought about backing the channel up to another platform?
With the decentralization and self hosting movement being more popular than ever, Peertube seems quite tempting, but not quite in my budget to set more servers and proper backup infrastructure up.

I've considered other options in the past, none seemed as friendly to bikers in terms of content awareness, but it probably is about time to look again.

Youtube seems to be aiming itself more towards the 'braindead' generation, with short form content the preferred choice over long or even medium form content, but with most video sharing sites going the same way, is there really a choice?

No other platform is ever going to be comparable if the aim is to make money with the videos. There is no point in dreaming about that. Also I don't think that there are any comparable platforms, for catching new audience, better than Youtube, be the algorithms what they are.
However, if the aim is to exchange videos within the community, then I am sure few of the alternative platforms are definitely viable. My thought is not to abandon Youtube, but to find a second platform, which could serve as a backup, if Youtube goes any further with downgrading older or lower resolution videos. What I consider precious in my channel are the travel videos and I want to keep them in good condition, no matter the age. I want to still be able to watch them one day, if I can't ride anymore. Most random vlogs can go.

I haven't thought about another platform. And my channels pay for my new gear, so I'm sticking with it for now.

I just don't have the bandwidth for any more channels/platforms at this point.

All good points. Please be patient with this reply as I just got through pissing off a supervisor at work by asking in the chat in a meeting with nothing but supervisors in attendance. All I did was ask, "Is it just me or is X confusing allegations with medically documented impairment sections?"o_O

So I might be a little off on what I write below.

Back to the topic

Like Jon said about making money, great on that but even making money it is a good idea to share content on other platforms like Theodore suggests for the sake of preserving what the creator actually did.

Years ago I tried using Vimeo free version. The platform is limiting on the amount I could share but did allow me to be more creative as far as not having fits for using copywrite music. Like one video where as song I heard from a famous person just fit with the scenery.

So Vimeo is out as far as I can tell.

Now something I do occasionally is link my videos to a website. But that costs money for the domain even for domain brokers that let you use free website build options.

What other video hosting platforms are out there?

The only big-ish one I heard of was Rumble. But it's small potatoes compared to YouTube. And all the music I use is from YouTube's audio library - they got me good on that one.

I have my own domain, and share links to my videos there... but you're right - there's a cost included. You can put Google AdSense on your own web sites, too, so that offsets part of it at least.

Links are not copies of videos though. So that is additional platform for sharing, but not storing.
If you have your own server space, you could theoretically host the videos too, but that's not very practical for virtual private servers, as the storage room costs quite a lot there. If you wish to have multiple resolution options for the player, that means several resolution renders too, which takes up quite a bit of space.
If you're hosting on your own server, and have sufficient drive space, it's not an issue. Then self hosted front end like Peertube is a reasonable option.
Dtube seems interesting too, but I have not studied it that much.

Uploading the video to Facebook or Tik Tok are options be it not great ones. I get a lot of views on my Tikie Tock but barely any followers, but that's probably because I only post there occasionally.

Sadly, every algorithm is against small creators, no matter the platform. If you have the fortune of making a couple of bucks off of videos, awesome, but would it be worth hosting them somewhere else that doesn't offer free storage with a bunch of strings attached? Probably not.
