Do any of you guys wear or know of a cheap - £5-20 hi-vis full hi-vis to put over your motorcycle jacket?

During the winter months, I'll be driving in the night a lot and would like to purchase one of these.

Thanks and much love!

There's an article this months copy of RIDE (I believe, anyway) from a lawyer that points out how ineffective hi vis jackets actually are.

I've never really seen the point in them myself.

Anyway...

I'm not sure if this is the same in your local area as it is mine, but a little while ago the police were giving out quite high quality florescent jackets for free. Might be worth seeing if your local police is doing something similar.
There are loads of places you can pick them up for free. All names allude me at this point though.

I picked up one of those high vis vests that contractors and road crews usually wear. You can pick them at hardware stores for cheap (at least here in the states. I would think in the UK as well.)

Just had Notts police take a pic of us for their latest promotion so they're doing a Think bike campaign whilst giving out bags soon. check with your local force to see if they're doing one in your area.

All advice and opinions that was given was excellent, I've decided that I will carry a sleveless hi-vis that I've still got from my old job, I acutely read that article on RiDE yesterday, I agree with what they're saying but I wear a black helmet and my motorcycle is black/grey. So, I think when I'm out at night, I will wear that hi-vis and hope it helps someway or another.

Bottom line... There's no HARM in wearing one as long as people who wear them don't assume they'll be seen.

Yes, I completely agree with this!

I was in ASDA the other night and they ha hi-vis vests for a couple of pound over at the car section. Don't know if it's any good to you.

no need to if ure motorbike gear already has built in reflectors

I would say, regardless of reflectors, the more the better. Here in the UK, Its pitch black at around 5 at this time of year, so I would say probs best to get a hi-vis. I wear a large Hi-vis jacket with the sleeves everyday to and from the office where I work. It's not neccesary that much in the morning but It is a good thing to have in the evening. Mine cost £18 from a local market and it is double quilted with fleece inner sleeves so it is very warm.

My advice would be to get a jacket if you want to wear it all the time. If you plan to wear on occasion, just get a vest.

I wear (wore) an Oxford one. Was pretty good and waterproof, might have to get a size or two too large for it to fit your wrists though. Just dont fall off, mines in tatters!

I think the best reason to wear one would be that when you're filtering more people might make way thinking you're Police. ;)

They don't even notice me going by with the exhaust blaring and my headlight shining... I doubt a high viz would make any difference.

Nor me - which is why I've never bothered. I'm not dead yet!

For the sake of a few squid, whatever floats your high viz boat, though. I'll leave them to the beardy weirdies who seem to love wearing them to make life on their allotment more adventurous as they plant some potatoes. I've never been able to work out exactly WHAT might run them over, but they all seem to wear them. :|
