Insta360 One R vs One X2 vs GoPro as a 2nd Camera setup?

I'm pretty satisfied with my GoPro Hero 7. I'm enjoying seeing footage from insta360 but worry that it may just be a passing interest.

Do you recommend One R, X2 or another GoPro as a second camera setup for motovlogging?

I think it depends on the resolution you record at and what you're after.

If you record in 1080, then I'd probably get a 360 camera. For instance, the GoPro Max has "Hero" mode where it records a flat image in 1080, IIRC. I haven't ever used it. This gives you a static image if you want it, but you can also record in 360, which nets about a 1080-resolution video.

If you record any higher than that on a regular basis, I'd go with a 2nd GoPro or an Insta camera that also shoots in that resolution.

360 shots are fun to play with in the editor, and more and more motovloggers are getting them. I doubt it's a passing fad, but it does add time to editing and gobs of storage space needed, so once the initial "shiny & new!" period wears off, they're using them sporadically. I know I am.

I have a GoPro Max and I use it specifically for that reason - as a second camera on my bike aimed at me with out using any sound. It's amazing resolution and pairs well with my other cameras. I have 2 other 360 cameras - a Rylo and an Insta360 One. The Insta is an early model and pretty low quality. I'm considering mounting it on my (cheap) drone because it has stability while I'm pondering getting a new Insta360 model to replace it.

Shooting 360 footage along with my other cameras is a big game changer, but it does increase the editing time for each vlog considerable. This is due to using a separate editor for my 360 that I then render out and add to my timeline in Premiere Pro. From there it's multi-camera editing that, if not done right as a set up, can also be a challenge to edit.

However, this also makes one's bike into a mobil filmstudio which is pretty badass when you think of it.

YUP, all true points!

FWIW, if you're using Resolve [and I think APP], there's a Reframe360 plugin you can download for free to reframe inside the editor - but the Insta cameras do stability and other stuff in their editor instead of in-camera like the GoPro.

I use GoPro's app to export the 360 footage as a wide format MP4 and then bring it into Resolve, where I reframe only the clips I'm actually using, which I think is a time-saver.

If anyone wants to go that direction, there's a tutorial vid I made, available on my YT channel, on using Reframe360 in Davinci Resolve.

I love the Insta360 cameras, I have the One X, One R and One X2 and used to have the GoPro Max. I've not posted any footage from them recently as I was having memory card issues, hopefully they are sorted now so can start using them again more regularly.
I think as a second camera they are great, but currently only as a second camera. I prefer the Insta360 products, but the GoPro Max is a great camera too.
Generally I use the One R when riding my dirtbike as it has strong lens protectors, and the One X2 on my road bikes. I've loaned my One X to another motovlogger. I personally didn't get on with the GoPro Max, mainly that was due to it not having a bundled editor for PC when it came out, which made editing the footage from it hard to do, GoPro have now sorted that, but I still think the Insta360 PC software is better. @Drakhen99 edits all his 360 stuff on Davinci Resolve iirc, so he doesn't have the issues I did.

Yes, true - but just to clarify, GoPro has their Player App, with a built-in Batch Exporter, which I use to convert the .360 files into .MP4 files - Resolve doesn't natively read .360 files. [there may be a plugin, but I am not sure].

I do, but they have to be converted from .360 format first. GoPro Player app will open them, but nothing else that I've found.

I've been using an Insta360 One X2 as my handlebar cam for a few months now and I LOVE IT! Allows me to film all around me while riding and it's been incredibly awesome and useful for making my motovlogs feel more active and alive. I'm still learning how to utilize it best as the potential filming in 360° opens up is quite large.

One thing I really like about the One X2 is the software it uses, super handy and easy to edit with.

Mainly because of reviews and grouprides, it is so much easier to get the footage you want afterwards

I get that - but you could justify it by saying the Insta is FOR the 2nd bike, and then get both

I was going to avoid the new camera, but @Drakhen99 has shown me the 10 it is not a heap of poop like the 9 was on launch, so have ordered one. I have finally got my 9 working properly, so hopefully pretty things will show on my channel when it arrives!

I literally have had TWO issues with the 10 in over 20 hours of recording. One I can't explain - there were 2 missing files where the Hero 9 showed the 10 in frame and it looked like it was recording, but the numerically subsequent files were from another day - that's a weird one. The second was using The Remote and hitting stop/start/stop/start/stop too quickly. The 10 got confused and said NAH and just stopped recording. Not a big deal.

Every other recording has worked fantastically.

I'm waiting patiently for the new firmware - expected in November.
