Apple pushed forward HTML5 (mostly) because their products have poor flash support. flash is faster on windows platform, even on same hardware. Adobe refuses to give apple some control over the format and it's a well-known war (ipods and iphones have no flash because apple wants to implement a custom-version not to allow flash game and app development beyond their control).
Google just wants to be on the front row and implement some self-suited code on the new format. Note that this is normal and a good thing. There's always peace when we agree on something, but when opinions differ doesn't mean war: that's how we evolve :) can't wait for micro$oft approach to this. I bet they will try to push Silverlight all the way until the format is dead, and then when everybody is developing html6, they will finally merge everything in I.E. 10.0 or something like that...

Nothing is set in stone LP. They're still developing things & they've invited users to offer feedback on what should or shouldn't change. Somehow I think this rubbish about giving a vid a "thumbs up" means automatically placing it into ur favorites won't make it out of beta.

Sometimes I really do wonder about what these YT staffers are thinking when they come up with some of their ideas.

I don't think the YT staffers are really users of the product. I too hate the idea of rating causing a video to show in your favorites. That's not what the favorites is for!

@MeanMachine, Flash on Windows is programmed straight to the hardware. It bypasses the DirectX SDK. That's the same as bypassing the APIs provided on OS X and iPhone OS for video. On top of that, Flash is responsible for over 95% of Safari crashes. Flash is simply bad. Snow Leopard now runs Flash in a separate process for plug-ins. That way, when Flash crashes it can't bring down Safari with it.

As it happens, there is a JavaScript library called Gordon which will allow Flash to run in a web page on iPhone OS. To work, Gordon has to be included in the Flash. I don't know the exact details. It also pegs the CPU.

I use ClickToFlash to avoid Flash abuse.

It's interesting what google searches turn up -- see Dogfooding. Notice that Google & Microsoft are specifically mentioned. :) Of course I don't know how reliable this stuff is but... whatever, u get the idea. Since google was mentioned, perhaps that includes YT devs too. :)

Eating your own dog food has been a standard term in the industry since the early 90s. I've been a user of all the software I've had a hand in writing.

Something to fool around with probably helps explain it better than mere words :)
Amazing HTML5 paint app -- Sorry Adobe Flash, your days are numbered.

It may just be me bein crazy, but the HTML5 version seems to have some odd pixelation, despite what quality you're on.

I haven't checked it out yet. I'm using ClickToFlash on my Macs. Sometimes that results in a native feed. Sometimes I have to click to enable the Flash player.

In theory, HTML5 should cause your OS to provide a content player that is able to deal with the A/V stream in an optimized fashion. YT is going with ITU standards like h.264. Apple has been using those all along. I don't know about Microsoft. They tend to have a serious case of NIH syndrome.

Well that's unlikely. They may have released PostScript and PDF specs. But their fonts are all copyrighted.
